Comments about the web site: At Ellis Island yesterday, I saw a model of the Aquitania. My mother sailed to Canada as a war bride in 1946 on the Aquitania. I was interested to find more information on the ship. Is it possible to get a drawing and/or floor plan? I would also like to find souvenirs and any other information possible. I have the printed menu from my mother's trip.

Comments about the web site: Hello, I found your information dealing with the M/V Aquitania very facinating and informative. My family sailed on M/V Aquitania, from Southampton, England to Halifax, Canada, in October, 1949. I have a black and white photograph and one colored post card of the ship, and on the reverse side of the card it lists the sailing info (log) for that (our) particular Atlantic crossing. I used the www.google.com to find your web site after entering "Aquitania". It is one of the fastest and very best search engines on the Internet. Thank you again for providing such nostalgic and historic information. Rein Neem, Washington State, USA

Comments about the web site: In addition to my e-mail, your Titanic section, something I know a lot about, is also full of inaccurate facts. Her gross tonnage for instance - 46,328 tons NOT 46,239. This looks like a typing error but there is much more wrong in the text. In any case, you really need to look at additional sources and do your own real research. Why not write your own accounts and sections on various ships, based on facts you gain from a number of different, more up to date sources. You must know a few thing yourself by now. You have a good site which could be much better. It may be good for the mildly interested or casual historian/researcher but not good enough for the serious enthusiast, maritime historian and researcher like me and many others. Just a few helpful hints for you. Simon.

Joseph went down with the ship, but his wife and children survived. Do you have any information? If so please e-mail me.

Comments about the web site: My family and I crossed from Southampton on Aquitania from March 8, 1949 to Halifax March 14, 1949. We came first class, four in one cabin. As an eleven year old I was much impressed by the size, the "lift" (just like a real hotel), my first coca cola (rather like saspirella, and not really great). My sister and I found a 'sweet' shop that didn't require coupons and were delighted. We rushed back to our cabin requesting money and bought 4- 1/2 boxes of chocolates (one for each of us) and promply ate the whole thing. The Childrens party was great I recall with balloons, ice cream and cakes. My sister and I were disappointed that the swimming pool and the gym were not operational as they were things we noted from the brochure about the ship. However I played endless ping pong on the enclosed deck with a little dutch boy. We couldn't talk to each other but it didn't stop the understanding. My father (a former merchant officer) said it was one of the quietest crossings of the north Atlantic he had ever had. He called it a 'lily pond'. I still have my blue landing card and a souvenir propelling pencil with a picture of Aquitania on it. I also crossed on the Empress of Britain from Montreal, April 7 to Liverpool April 14, 1959. That was the worst crossing the captain had ever had, he said. I still have the menu that was printed with the weather report instead of the wine list. It tells how bad the weather was. We were over 24 hours late - unheard of, and we did not stop in Scotland as intended but slipped by the tip of Northern Ireland, into Liverpool to try to make up some time. Several nights I slept in the lounge as it was too dangerous to manoeuvre the companionways and staircases. The last night they had the gala party and dance. I was 21, and in my best dress trying to look sophisticated. A goreous young officer all in white asked me to dance but moments later we were on our bottoms on the other side of the dance floor. This was the last night when the weather had abated you understand! At the dock in Liverpool I asked if it was a floating dock as it moved around a lot. The dock hand laughed as it was a very solid dock. It was me with sea legs that was still moving, not the dock. Thanks for a great site! Elizabeth (Frankland) Alexander

I think it was operated by Furness Withey Line, West Hartleoppol, England. It was torpedoed by the Germans during World War Iand all hanmds were presumed lost but after an incredibly long time a few of the crew (including my grandfather - Ford Stafford Irvin - brought it back to port. As a child I remember seeing the gold medal he was presented with. My aunt still has that medal. Any further information would be greatly appreciated as many members of my family have sadly died off or gone gaa gaa! Regards, John Bennett, Castle Donington UK

One of my daughters has it hanging in her living room. It strikes me as something from german mythology. It would be very interesting to see any pictures of the ships' interior when it was a German liner.

We came cheapest which meant my mum, sister and I were in a cabin (total 20) of women and children and my father and brother were below the water line in with the men. It was very rough weather that time of year and my mom was the only one in the dining room for most of the trip. She was never seasick and the staff would take bets to see if she would show up. I am searching my roots and will add the information on the Aquitania to my finished product so that my grandchildren can see the ship I sailed on. Thanks so much.

I recall, as a nine year old, the ships cargo had shifted after we cleared the English channel, and the the ship listed at about a 30degree angle. I recall how peculiar the passengers looked walking along the passageway on an angle and water flowing into the wash basins. Another boy and myself managed to go out on deck and we were sliding from one side to the other on the wet deck. I am not sure if we were "fore or aft" Thanks for the memories. John

I do admit, of course, that The Titanic has always held a fascinating grip on me, not only because of her tragic story, but because of the sheer beauty of this fabulous ship. My grandmother also had friends who were coming to America on board her so many years ago. They were brother and sister. As fate played out so many times on that terrible night, she was able to survive, but he was not. I first heard the story of the Titanic way back in 1957 when I was ten years old and I have been hooked ever since. I guess that I am an original Titanic finatic! I was in love with her lore way before Jim Cameron made his fabulous movie. May her legend live on forever.

Comments about the web site: As a WWII veteran I was transported from New York to Gourock, Scotland in June 1944 (was somewhere on the Atlantic on D-Day). I was amazed that we made the crossing (5 days) without Navy escort. We were told that we were unescorted because she could outrun the German submarines. We travelled a zig-zag course to escape any torpedoes that might have been launched toward us. Can you tell me where I can get more info on the Aquitania? How many troops did she carry during WWII and how long did she serve as a troop ship on the Atlantic? Where is she now? I would like to visit her if she is available. I liked your pictures. I did not remember what she looked like.

Comments about the web site: I just want to thank you for these pages, for it was kind of chilling to read the story of Imperator her being the ship on which my grandmother was born 80 years ago. That story of her family returning from USA back to Finland and my granny being born during that journey has been an awsome legend to us grandchildren and it was only now, when we celebrated her 80th birthday and heard that story more detailed than before,it occurred to me thet there must be some info about that ship in the net - and there was. So I am now able to tell her more about Imperator and her faith, of which none of us knew anything before. And being born on an oceanliner and even baptised in her honour - granny`s second name is Imperia - has always ment a lot to my grandmother and made her even more special for the rest of the family. So many thanks to you for trying to keep the memory of those liners and that era alive. My best regards piak

Probably about 30 ships (obviously not all that ever sailed). Beginning with the Kaiser Wilhelm De Grosse and ending with the QE2. (skipped the modern cruise ships which don't meet the criteria of transoceanic ships. Now looking forward to the new Cunarder. I would like to get some pictures of the CPR ships of the Duchess class. They are hard to find. If you know of a source I would be very grateful. (both of my parents served on three of the Duchess boats.) Thanks, Neil S

Her final voyage to this country from Scotland was on the Caledonia which was the next ship after the destruction of the Athenia. It picked up many of the survivors of that ship. I have, in its original containor with the wiskey still in it, one of the tiny complimentary things of wiskey they distributed to the passangers of the Calidonia. She has a note in the tiny plaid box an explenation of what it is. Doris
